Mazedul Hasan Shakil

Chairman and Founder of Worcester LGBT

This journey is about more than support—it’s about dignity, connection, and lasting change for LGBTQ+ individuals across the UK.

Mazedul Hasan Shakil is the visionary founder and dedicated Chairman of Worcester LGBT (Asylum, Support, Network), an organisation committed to supporting asylum seekers within the LGBTQ+ community. His personal journey as a refugee who was granted asylum in the UK on the grounds of his sexuality has shaped his unwavering commitment to helping others facing similar challenges.

Born in Bangladesh, Shakil faced persecution due to his sexual orientation in a country where homosexuality is punishable by life imprisonment and where homophobic attitudes are deeply entrenched in society. After arriving in the UK, he was granted refugee status when the Home Office recognised the genuine risks he would face if returned to Bangladesh.

Judicial Recognition: In case PA/13326/2018, the First-tier Tribunal formally recognised Shakil’s standing, describing him as “a prominent member of the gay community” and assessing his evidence as “particularly credible.” The Tribunal further stated that it did not accept that he “would be prepared to kindise [his] position by supporting a non-genuine claim.” This acknowledgment reflects the seriousness and integrity with which he approaches every case in which he offers support.

“Every person deserves to live authentically without fear of persecution. Our work at Worcester LGBT is about creating safe spaces and fighting for those whose voices often go unheard in the asylum system.”

Since establishing Worcester LGBT in Worcester, Shakil has transformed the organisation into a vital lifeline for LGBTQ+ asylum seekers facing the dual challenges of navigating both the complex asylum process and the difficulties of being LGBTQ+ in unfamiliar surroundings. Under his leadership, the organisation has developed comprehensive support systems that address the unique needs of this vulnerable community.

Shakil’s approach combines practical support with passionate advocacy. He maintains regular correspondence with the Home Office regarding asylum support policies, consistently pushing for improvements in how LGBTQ+ asylum cases are handled. His expertise on these issues has made him a respected voice in discussions about asylum policy and LGBTQ+ rights.

Our Impact on the Community

Under Shakil's leadership, Worcester LGBT has become a beacon of hope for LGBTQ+ asylum seekers across the region. We provide:
Legal Support & Guidance

We help individuals understand the complex asylum process, prepare for interviews, and gather the necessary evidence to support their claims based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

We work with local partners to ensure LGBTQ+ asylum seekers have access to safe accommodation where they can live without fear of discrimination or harassment.

Recognising the trauma many asylum seekers have experienced, we provide access to mental health resources specifically sensitive to LGBTQ+ experiences and cultural backgrounds.

We organise regular social events and support groups to combat isolation and build a sense of belonging for those who may have lost connection with their families and home communities.

We work with local communities, businesses, and government bodies to increase understanding of LGBTQ+ asylum issues and advocate for policy changes that better protect these vulnerable individuals.

A Personal Note from Our Chairman

Through my own journey as an LGBTQ+ refugee, I have experienced firsthand the challenges of seeking safety while also embracing my authentic identity. This personal experience drives my commitment to Worcester LGBT and the work we do every day.

My background enables me to provide informed, honest, and contextually aware assistance to LGBTQ+ asylum seekers, particularly those from regions where sexual orientation or gender identity places individuals at serious risk of harm or persecution.

I believe that every person deserves to live with dignity, respect, and the freedom to be themselves without fear. At Worcester LGBT, we do more than provide services—we create family for those who may have lost theirs, we build community for those seeking belonging, and we fight tirelessly for justice for those whose voices have been silenced.

Our correspondence with the Home Office continues to push for more sensitive and appropriate handling of LGBTQ+ asylum cases. We are grateful for the recognition of our work but remain committed to improving the system for all those seeking safety.

If you are an LGBTQ+ asylum seeker in need of support, or if you wish to support our mission, please do not hesitate to reach out. Together, we can create a more inclusive and compassionate society for all.

With pride and solidarity,

Mazedul Hasan Shakil
